Grace was 9 years old on May 18th. She was born premature, weighing a mere 2 lbs and 8 oz and had several severe birth defects. This caused her to be in the NICU for over 7 weeks after she was born. Grace continued to struggle medically and spent the first three years of her life in and out of the hospital. She has had numerous surgeries in her short life, the most physically challenging of which have been the surgeries on her tethered spinal cord. Grace's spinal cord has re-tethered four times since her first spine surgery at 9 months old. Like so many things about Grace this is a somewhat unique occurrence-her neurosurgeon has not experienced a patient where re-tethering continues to happen. Despite her health challenges, Grace has an incredible, feisty spirit and a real zest for life.
